How to choose a gift for your first Christmas

A baby's first Christmas is exciting! There's nothing like a baby to remind you of the magic and meaning of Christmas. With all this excitement, you may not know what gifts to choose for a baby. At Bontibú we have some experience when it comes to buying gifts for the little ones and we are going to share several tips with you:

LESS IS MORE

The first rule when choosing gifts for a baby's first Christmas is: don't overdo it! Most of us make the mistake of buying too many gifts that most of the time they don't even play with or we also end up buying things that the baby neither wants nor needs. Babies have no real concept of Christmas or what the concept of a gift is. The act of tearing the paper and opening a box is already fascinating for babies because they enjoy the sensory aspect of it. The actual gift is often the least interesting. So be mindful of what you choose to put under the tree this Christmas. Don't get carried away by the Christmas spirit!!

CHOOSE PRACTICAL OVER PLASTIC

It can be very tempting to buy your baby all the latest plastic toys. However, keep in mind that babies can only play with one toy at a time, so they don't need hundreds of options. Spend some time looking at options.

Are there wooden alternatives to any of the plastic toys you're considering? If so, wooden toys can spark imagination and sensory exploration without the overstimulation of flashing lights and loud sounds that plastic toys often have. Choose high-quality items that last and can be passed down to other siblings, cousins, friends.... If you have to buy plastic, look for eco-friendly options.

Depending on your baby's age, a couple of toys will probably be enough. If family and friends ask for gift ideas, don't be afraid to suggest practical items they need. Sure, natural baby skin care may not sound as fun as a lighting truck or a doll, but there are plenty of years ahead of you to buy exactly what your child wants.

RULE OF 4 GIFTS

How many gifts is the correct amount? The answer will change depending on who you talk to. But at Bontibú, we are aware of the impact that excess consumption can have on the environment and children. Setting a limit now while they are little will help them establish an objective expectation about the gifts they will receive. When we limit the number of gifts, we force ourselves to be really mindful of what we buy - and it teaches our children to think and choose carefully what they want.

An easy system to follow is the rule of the four gifts that goes like this: Something you want, Something you need, Something to wear, Something to read.
